Anyone planning a visit to Fortingall should get hold of ‘Fortingall’ by SPB Mais – a prolific journalist, BBC broadcaster and author in the 1930s. Stuart Mais visited Fortingall some 80 years ago – it was he who said Fortingall was a delightful discovery. He was in raptures about the hotel, its food and service. He was enchanted by the village and Glen Lyon. Nothing much has changed at the hotel – well there are en-suites, TVs and Wi-Fi – and that’s about it. This is truly a place where time stands still. There is usually a copy of the Mais book in the hotel library. It is an excellent guide to Glen Lyon – one of the most under-rated Wonders of Scotland.

Lovely Hotel, Superb Manager Nov 2022

Our one night stay at the historic Fortingall Hotel was simply not long enough but all that our travel plan permitted. Our rooms were lovely and comfortable. The hotel is clean and traditionally decorated in beautiful style. Lovely setting in the wee village of Fortingall, charming thatched roofed homes, the ancient yew, and historic church beside it. Beyond a doubt, the manager Gabriel may arguably be the most hospitipal and efficient hotel manager we have ever met~superb. Thank you for your concern and assistance as we walked the Innerwick to Kinloch Rannoch route.

Excellent Highland Hotel Date of stay: September 2022

This is an excellent place to stay in a beautiful location. The rooms are clean and warm and comfortable, and breakfast is delicious. They have a lovely friendly bar as well as other rooms where you can sit in front of a roaring firs with a nip of whisky - perfect after a rainy autumn day. The manager - Gabriel - really goes the extra mile to be welcoming and helpful - many thanks!

Heaven is in Fortingall Date of stay: September 2022

Spent 2 nights here in Glenlyon room. My husband and I had the most comfortable and memorable stay ever. Gabriel and the staff looked after our every need, advising on walks attractions and routes. Restaurant was closed and having had dinner at this hotel before we were a little disappointed but it turned out well as we were taken to nearby restaurants and picked up, even bumped into a friend at one. Breakfast was absolutely the best the service and choice excellent. Really enjoyed the music in the bar and next night enjoyed sitting by the fire in the library till very late sipping whiskey browsing the many interesting books. The hotel was cosy beautifully decorated traditional antiques and artwork. So many highland hotels are being stripped of character and the Scandinavian modern look replacing old charm. This is my new favourite place in Scotland. Had a lovely walk to Peters Pool it was a sunny warm day and 3 people were taking a dip. I will bring my swimsuit next time.
Comfortable bed a wonderful peaceful nights sleep.

Breath of fresh air. Date of Stay July 2021

Beautiful traditional hotel in a stunning setting. Hospitality wonderful, professional and friendly. Food and wine very good. Twin room lovely views, very clean and tastefully decorated. Pretty garden to enjoy an after dinner drink. If your looking for a relaxing break do not hesitate to book this charming hotel.

Beautiful and memorable Date of stay: July 2021

We enjoyed a lovely meal in the restaurant. Our waitress was helpful and quite funny. I recommend the Cullen Skink as a starter. I loved the live music on Friday evening with a variety of local songs such as ‘Fortingall’ and old favourites like ‘16 Tons’. The musicians played in the hotel garden over looking the beautiful glen which made the whole evening really memorable.

Lovely meal Date of stay: August 2021

Great quality food, warm friendly people and fantastic surroundings. We ate in the restaurant rather than the bar so not sure what the difference in the menus would be but it was a perfect end to our holiday. Just a shame it's only open weekends. Will definitely be back next time we are here.

A Peaceful Spot with Excellent Food May 2021

We first stayed at this hotel several years ago. This year, on a journey south from the Outer Hebrides, it was the obvious choice to break our journey. Cumulative delays had meant that we were running late for dinner; however, when we called the Hotel they reassured us that we would still be served dinner when we arrived (even though this was later than a normal service)The welcome was warm and friendly, despite the fact that the Hotel was short of staff. That didn't impact on the service, which was personable and we were looked after well. The food was excellent, our room comfortable and the ambience very pleasant. Following a comfortable night and an excellent breakfast, we continued our journey, glad that we had opted to return. This hotel has character, the staff care about their guests and the food is consistently excellent. We'll be back.

“Just about Perfect” Reviewed May 2016 - 5 out of 5

'Spent one night in this understated, luxurious but cosy hotel with welcoming staff. Our room was clean and comfortable with wonderful views of Glen Lyon. The setting is idyllic: not only Glen Lyon but thatched Fortingall village with its famous yew. No charge for dogs in this dog-friendly hotel.

Although we enjoyed our vegetarian meal, we would have appreciated more choice for starters and mains.'

'My husband and I have just spent two very relaxing days at this hotel. The location is just idyllic, we so enjoyed waking up each morning to the sight and sound of the new lambs. James, Roxy and Mags were so welcoming and helpful with any request during our stay. The hotel was very clean, food was delicious and very well presented, little touches made our stay just perfect.

Thank you'

“Just an utter delight....” Reviewed  April 2016 - 5 out of 5

'This was a brief visit on our way home but we will be returning. Our room was just lovely full of 'Arts and Crafts' furnishing as is the whole hotel. We had lots of space and added extras as well as a lovely view over the fields and strath. Everywhere was spotless and service superb being both efficient and friendly. Dinner was really tasty and interesting though the large portions eventually defeated me. Breakfast was excellent with really good coffee, bacon and smoked salmon. The owner/ manager is clearly 'hands on' and is doing a fantastic job providing us with a really personalised visit.

Room Tip: Best views from rooms at front of hotel'

’Full marks to this delightful team of enthusiastic owners and outstanding staff for having organised an amazing Hogmanay celebration. Our three-day stay was a masterclass in perfect Scottish hospitality. The interesting and relaxing programme of entertainment was topped off by some of the best cuisine we’ve ever enjoyed – anywhere! Cue the applause and standing ovation.’’ See Trip Advisor – page 9.
